A Successful Muslim; A Successful Human Being

Assalamu’alaykum,

Every existing creature exists for a purpose with fixed time. Once the time reaches its end, the creatures shall be taken back to their only One Creator, Allah. Within the given predetermined time, opportunities are granted as to fulfill the purpose for which the objective of the creation is thus harmonized. Trees exist for a purpose, fishes down the sea stay alive for a purpose, clouds floating by on the air for a purpose and so do human beings stand in this world for a purpose i.e. to worship Allah alone.

"I created the jinn and humankind only that they might worship Me."
-Surah Ad-Dzariyaat, Ayat 56

One after another, challenges befall upon us human beings in our pursuit to receive the abundant blessings of Allah. Every one of us has been given one specific spectacular unique capabilities which others do not possess and at the youth stage of life, those facilities are what when it is contributed at its uppermost level. Being the youth is not something easy. If the smouldering spirit streaming inside the blood capillaries is not directed to the way it is supposed to, then disaster will be the outcome.

“Those who wish to predict a nation's future can do so accurately by analyzing the education and upbringing being given to its young people.”
- Fethullah Gulen

Living in this universe as a youth really wakes our nerves all day long. Everything is black and white and we will put up unwavering efforts to establish the truth and justice. But, of these ambitious dreams are perhaps so subjective that it keeps on giving a fiasco instead of satisfaction. We conduct programmes after programmes; a visit to the orphanage, distributing pamphlets explaining about Islam, creating blogs and talk about charities and its significance, demanding justice to be upheld and the heart is still feeling as hard as the rock scattered all over at the road edge. What could have gone wrong and what are exactly the actual qualities of being a prudent and successful youth?

God-Consciousness

A true Muslim is the one who submits him/herself towards Allah, the Almighty. Islam is widely known built upon the 5 noble pillars; one of it is to establish prayer 5 times a day. Regardless of the time and place, Muslims are obliged to perform the prayers the way that Prophet Muhammad (saw) had taught to us. If one is happened to fall sick or to be misshapen and disabled then he or she is allowed to pray the way that he or she is capable of doing so, as again explained in the Prophetic tradition. None of the act of worship shall go against the principles and thoughts which Islam has come with. This is one essential quality of being a good Muslim, because if there is no intact and strong bond with Allah, be it charity works or humanitarian activities, those acts are with the absent blessings of Allah. Why would you pay your lawn mower when he cuts off others' lawns?

Maybe, the biggest challenge when at the stage of adolescent and youth is to refrain ourselves from falling into unlimited desires. To see our destiny is to observe our characteristics. Shaytan of course will not stop whispering you to be far away from Allah through a very delicate way where one would not be aware of it. Shaytan will incite you to wear immoderately and spend your money wastefully for personal pleasures though you might see it as something worth it after dying working for the money. We eat until we feel overwhelmed not when we feel enough, we buy clothes not accordingly but lavishly, we insult others instead of advising them and the list goes on.

“And no one will be granted such goodness except those who exercise patience and self-restraint, none but persons of the greatest good fortune.”
-Surah Al-Fussilat, Ayat 5

Be Truthful and Honest

When your friends lie to you what would you feel? Angry? How about when the question is now directed to your friends and what do you think your friends would feel when you lie to them? The same answer is given. Now, who do you rely on in this world? None other but Allah, the Most Trustworthy. Why? Because Allah has never gone against something which He has promised and He will stick to His promises no matter what. So we feel really good and comfortable to have Allah to rely on as we know that He would not lie to us. This applies the same towards our formation of being a successful Muslim. When we are given trusts, do not be disloyal to it and do not be such a back-biter and have so many faces. This only will harden your heart.

Abu Musa reported Allah's Apostle (may peace be upon him) as saying:
"The honest Muslim trustee who spends (sometimes he said" who gives" ) what he is commanded to do and he gives that in full with his heart overflowing with cheerfulness and he gives it to one to whom he is ordered, he is one of the givers of charity."
(Sahih Muslim)

Chastity/Self-Purification

Have you ever heard a story of one companion of the Prophet Muhammad by the name Abdullah Ibn Makhtoum? There was a time when Prophet Muhammad was giving full attention to the prominent group of the Quraish Chiefs, hoping that they may embrace Islam. Abdullah Ibn Makhtoum came and approached the Prophet and asked him to teach and explain the words of Allah. Prophet Muhammad frowned and turned away from him which after the Qurash Chiefs left, his head pulsates and throbs so violently and thus Surah ‘Abasa was revealed.

It is illustrated in Surah ‘Abasa from the very beginning up until the end about lessons that we can learn and closed with the situation for the believers and disbelievers soon in the eternal journey. After Prophet Muhammad was exhorted by Allah, whenever he had talks or discussions, if he saw Abdullah, he would call him to sit next to him. Abdullah, a blind man managed to extend his Da’wah towards so many people. Despite the facts the he could not see at all, he even plead to hold the flag during the war of Badr. What had made this slave of Allah who was disable to have such enthusiasm?

"And how can you know that he might become pure (from sins)?"
-Surah 'Abasa, Ayat 3

Indeed, he had a purified heart in his efforts of learning the words of Allah. To reflect this verse upon us, try to re-examine ourselves whenever the Adhan is being made, did we immediately answer or feel irritated? And when somebody talk about Islam, did we entertain him nicely or we give him an obnoxious look?.

Cleanse the souls from our own evil acts and the adverse consequences of our deeds. Flick through the Qur’an and recite it wholeheartedly. Do not just recite but also ponder upon the verses of Allah so that we may learn.

Keep Promises

Words are like so easy to say but most of the time hardly to be done. Often we hear people say like “I promise that I am going to pay your money back very soon” or maybe “Trust me, I swear! To give your books back tonight” and so many more. So much so, many promises we made when we are only in troubles especially when we cause something bad to our friends but at the end of the day, it turns out to be merely a deception. Watch out, if you practice this, you might just fall into the track of the hypocrites.

Narrated Abu Huraira: Allah's Apostle said,
"The signs of a hypocrite are three: (1) whenever he speaks, he tells a lie, (2) whenever he is entrusted, he proves to be dishonest, (3) whenever he promises, he breaks his promise.
(Sahih Bukhari)

Repay Kindness

We at times, tend to be extremely shy as our friends lending us some helping hands. If we were about to count back how many people have we leaned on to get ourselves out of the misery would it be countable? If it is countable and still fresh inside our mind, reflect for a while, how many of them have we repay their kindnesses? People keep on grumbling over the absent of rewards after they have helped others and it seems to be irrelevant. Islam teaches us to be fully sincere and expect no rewards. In Islam it is called Ithar which psychologically known as Altruism explains a selfless act which we prioritize others before our own amenities.

'A'isha , the wife of Allah's Apostle , reported that Allah's Messenger said:
'A'isha, verily Allah is kind and He loves kindness and confers upon kindness which he does not confer upon severity and does not confer upon anything else besides it (kindness).
[Sahih Muslim - Book 032: Hadith 6273]
Conclusion

These are the 5 basic qualities to be a good human being as well as a good Muslim. Force ourselves to develop these characteristic in ourselves as to present our respect towards the wisest human being, Last Messenger of Allah, Prophet Muhammad (SAW) and emulate him for the sake of betterment of this Ummah. We are of course can never be perfect, but we can learn from those who reflect.

"When I enquired of you what he (Muhammad) ordered you, you replied that he ordered you to establish the prayer, to speak the truth, to be chaste, to keep promises, and to pay back trusts." Then Heraclius added, "These are really the qualities of a prophet."

(Sahih Al-Bukhari)
